When practicing to perform a routine, what is the most important aspect that a twirler should focus on? Without a doubt the entire presentation of the performance. Instead of approaching the solo or strut or any other category of competition as if it’s a way to show off your big tricks, look at it from the perspective of putting on a show. The judges and audience want to be entertained. Twirlers with much less talent and ability then their competitors can win just because they have this approach. Everything must be taken into consideration such as your costume, your makeup, how you perform your tricks and how the routine flows. Many times twirlers will focus on achieving hard tricks and forget about the overall performance. If your level of difficulty is harder then the next competitor but you have more breaks, don’t smile as much, and seem to struggle through your routine, that will hurt your score. I will score the twirler higher who had less ability but a smoother, more entertaining and better overall performance. So when you are practicing, try to think like an audience member or a judge. This transition in your thinking can make the difference between not placing and taking the trophy.
